On April 25, 2015 Nepal was hit by a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was located in Lamjung district, 50 miles west from the capital Kathmandu, which was followed by series of aftershocks greater than 5 magnitudes in Richter scale. The most powerful aftershock of magnitude 7.3 occurred on May 12, 2015 that aggravated the already devastated situation. 31 districts have been worst hit which has already claimed more than 8,400 lives (as of May 17, 2015). The quake has injured about 17,900 people and destroyed significant infrastructures and public properties leaving tens of thousands homeless. Several UNESCO world heritage sites have been completely devastated and hundreds of ancient temples and monasteries are ravaged. Numerous dry landslides have been reported resulting in blockage of major highways. Still, thousands of stranded and injured people are waiting to be rescued and treated. People are taking temporary shelter, and are in acute shortage of food, drinking water and clothes. These are lacking hygiene and sanitation, thus increasing an inevitable risk of epidemics.
In this context, the Nepalese Student Organization (NSA) together with strong support from multiple student organizations at Virginia Tech is undertaking a fundraising effort, and we make an appeal to contribute. Funds collected in the short term will be used for immediate relief of earthquake victims and their families in Nepal. Funds raised in the longer-term will be used for rebuilding efforts. Since many of us are personally affected by this earthquake, all of us are working passionately towards raising funds.
Our efforts might be a drop of water in an ocean. However, the ocean is made up of little drops of water. If all of us work hard, and together, all the little drops could form an ocean and really make a difference. So join us in making a difference in the lives of grief-stricken people in Nepal because of the devastating earthquake. We are a non-profit, registered student organization. We will be donating a hundred percent of what we have collected to the relief and rebuilding efforts. We will make sure that all the money reaches the people and the community, including rural areas in Nepal.
